What Are the Different Types of Antennas and What Are Their Advantages and Disadvantages?

For handheld radios, we generally distinguish between short antennas – known as stubby antennas – and long antennas, often called whip or helical antennas.

What Should I Pay Attention To?

The antenna must both fit the connector on your handheld radio and cover the frequency range your device operates on.

I Have Many Frequencies Programmed or Don’t Know Which Ones Are in Use

In this case, the easiest option is to use a broadband antenna that covers the entire frequency range of the respective band. Some manufacturers also use color markings on the antenna base – simply unscrew it and check.

What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Short and Long Antennas?

Short Antennas

Short antennas are usually more comfortable to wear but cover only a smaller frequency range. They reduce transmission range and must be selected according to the specific frequencies used.

Long Antennas

Long antennas are generally more flexible, cover a wider frequency range, and can improve communication range. They are more sensitive in signal reception and put less mechanical stress on the radio’s antenna connector.

What Does “GPS” Mean on Some Antennas?

Some handheld radios have built-in GPS receivers without a separate antenna. If you use this feature, you’ll need an antenna that supports not only the VHF or UHF range but also the GPS frequency band.

How to Find the Right Antenna

First, filter by manufacturer and then by your radio model to find a compatible antenna.
